Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 cup (240g) pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk (any kind)
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (85g) dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.
  3. In another large bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vegetable oil, pumpkin purée, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Fold in semi-sweet and dark chocolate chips, reserving about ¼ cup for topping.
  6. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each about ¾ full. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Let muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For taller domed tops, let batter rest 10 minutes before baking. Rotate pan halfway through baking. Use 100% pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling. Muffins keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
