A simple, set-it-and-forget-it slow cooker apple cider that combines tart and sweet apples with warm spices for a rich, comforting autumn drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6–8 medium apples (mix of tart and sweet, e.g., Honeycrisp and Granny Smith), chopped into chunks
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 64 oz (2 liters) 100% pure apple juice
  • 1–2 cups water (optional, for consistency)
  • 3–4 large cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
  • 1 pod star anise
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Wash apples thoroughly, remove cores, and chop into rough, bite-sized chunks. Slice the orange into thin rounds.
  2. Place the chopped apples and orange slices into the slow cooker.
  3. Pour in the apple juice and add water if desired.
  4. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice berries, and star anise. Add honey or maple syrup if using.
  5. Stir gently to distribute the spices.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours until apples are tender.
  7. Remove fruit and spices with a ladle or strainer. For clearer cider, pour liquid through a fine-mesh strainer.
  8. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Serve warm.

Notes

Use whole spices instead of ground to avoid grittiness. Do not cook on HIGH as it can make apples mushy and boil off delicate flavors. The cider can be kept on the ‘warm’ setting for up to 4 hours. Leftovers can be refrigerated for 5 days or frozen for 3 months.
