These crispy bacon-wrapped grilled asparagus bundles are a perfect BBQ side, combining smoky, crispy bacon with tender asparagus for a delicious and easy-to-make dish.

  • 2 pounds fresh asparagus spears, trimmed and washed
  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Coarse sea salt or kosher salt, to finish
  • Lemon wedges (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Trim the asparagus by snapping or cutting off the woody ends. Rinse and pat dry.
  2. Gather 6 to 8 asparagus spears per bundle, adjusting based on thickness.
  3. Wrap one slice of thick-cut bacon tightly around each asparagus bundle, securing with kitchen twine or a toothpick if needed.
  4. Lightly brush the bacon-wrapped bundles with olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper. Do not salt before grilling.
  5. Preheat the grill to medium heat (350°F to 375°F). Oil the grates to prevent sticking.
  6. Place the bundles on the grill perpendicular to the grates. Close the lid and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, turning every 3 to 4 minutes until bacon is bubbly and browned and asparagus is tender but still crisp.
  7. Remove bundles from the grill, sprinkle with coarse sea salt and additional black pepper, and serve immediately with lemon wedges if desired.

Notes

Use thick-cut bacon for best texture and flavor. Wrap bundles tightly to prevent unraveling. Turn bundles often to ensure even cooking and avoid flare-ups. If bacon browns too quickly, move bundles to indirect heat. Serve immediately for best crispiness. Leftovers can be reheated in oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
