Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (18 oz) brownie mix (fudgy variety, such as Ghirardelli or Duncan Hines)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (whole milk preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)
  • Green gel food coloring (4-8 drops)
  • White piping gel (for yard lines)
  • Mini football candies or chocolate footballs (optional, for decoration)
  • White chocolate melting wafers (optional, for yard line markers)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides. Lightly spray with nonstick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water until just combined (about 40 strokes). Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine.
  3. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Tap pan gently on counter to release air bubbles.
  4. Bake for 22-25 minutes. Check at 22 minutes: insert a toothpick into center; it should come out with a few moist crumbs, not wet batter. Cool in pan on wire rack for 15 minutes, then lift out using parchment and cool completely.
  5. While brownies cool, make buttercream: In a large bowl, beat softened butter with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy (about 2 minutes). Add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low after each addition. Add milk and vanilla, then beat on medium-high for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  6. Add green gel food coloring, starting with 4 drops and adding more until desired grass color is reached (usually 6-8 drops total). Mix thoroughly.
  7. Place cooled brownie block on a cutting board or platter. Spread green frosting in a thin, even layer over the top using an offset spatula.
  8. Using white piping gel in a piping bag or ziplock bag with a tiny corner snipped off, pipe straight yard lines across the width of the brownie block, about 1.5 inches apart.
  9. Pipe a thicker white line at each end for end zones. Optionally, place mini football candies in end zones or add small numbers/hash marks.
  10. Refrigerate decorated brownies for 20-30 minutes to firm up frosting. Use a sharp knife to trim edges and cut into bars (about 24 bars). Wipe knife clean between cuts for best results.

Notes

Don’t overbake brownies; pull when toothpick has moist crumbs. Cool completely before frosting to prevent melting. Use gel food coloring, not liquid, to avoid thinning frosting. Pipe yard lines immediately after frosting while still soft. Cut with a wet knife for clean edges. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze individually wrapped for up to 2 months. Bars taste even better the next day.
