Transform a humble can of pears into a warm, cinnamon-kissed dessert with a rich vanilla syrup. Ready in under 20 minutes, this budget-friendly treat is perfect for late-night cravings or impressing guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) pear halves or slices, packed in juice or light syrup, drained
  • 23 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract or 1 vanilla bean
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Drain the pears in a colander for a couple of minutes. If packed in heavy syrup, rinse briefly with cold water and pat dry.
  2. If using a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Reserve both seeds and pod.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, lemon juice, salt, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla (seeds and pod, or extract). Stir and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add butter and stir until melted.
  5. Stir in ground nutmeg.
  6. Gently add the drained pears in a single layer. Spoon some syrup over the tops. Reduce heat to low-medium to maintain a gentle simmer.
  7. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, turning pears gently halfway through, until pears are tender and translucent around the edges and syrup coats the back of a spoon.
  8. Remove from heat and let pears cool in the syrup for 5 minutes.
  9. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled. Transfer to a jar or airtight container for storage.

Notes

Don’t overcook the pears—they are already cooked and only need to be warmed and infused. For a deeper cinnamon flavor, toast the cinnamon sticks in the dry saucepan for 30 seconds before adding liquid. Double the syrup ingredients if you want extra for drizzling. Avoid using ground cinnamon as it makes the syrup cloudy and gritty.
